Book Tour Part 2- The Guardians of Man - Guest Character Interview

Tour Schedule Here

I asked both authors who make up "Connor Titus" to have a character of their choice interview with me. I want to welcome Justin Granthem  (Lori "Titus"'s choice), Marradith's love interest from Hunting in Closed Spaces to the blog.

1. How do you feel about your role in the book?
I feel good about my part in the book. Lori was pretty fair about showing my side of things. I have tried to sell her on a couple of different crossover ideas, and she hasn't budged. I'm not sure what that's about.

2. Did you have fun during the writing of your tale?
Yes, but my body count was a little low. I'm hoping to get some more killing in during the third book in the series.

3. What would you do with your own happy ending ?
Take off to the Caribbean!  Marradith and I got to spend some time there last summer, but I would love to retire and move permanently. That's not in the cards for a while.

4. If you could have any animal for a pet, what would it be?
A timber wolf, perhaps. I don't mind cats, but they are terrified of me.

5. If you could be anyone else, would you? If so, who?
Someone else? I don't know what you're talking about. I'm a catch! Seriously, I wouldn't want to be anyone else, especially if it meant Marradith wasn't my girl anymore.

6. What was the saddest moment of your life?
It happened in book 2 of the series, which isn't out yet. Sorry, but Lori has me under gag order about that.

7. If you could tell the author anything, what would you say?
I tell her things all the time! I guess my biggest request would be for her to listen to my ideas more often.

8. What is the one goal you hope to achieve in life before you die?
I want to kill Syd! He disgusts me. On a more personal note.... oh hell, sorry,  I almost gave away another spoiler for The Art of Shadows.  Lori told you that's her working title for book 2, right? Damn. Next question,  please.

9. What do you wish to be remembered for?
I want to be remembered as a man who stood up for what was right, regardless of who didn't like it.

Book Tour Part 1- The Guardians of Man - Guest Character Interview

Tour Schedule Here

I asked both authors who make up "Connor Titus" to have a character of their choice interview with me. I want to welcome Khrystle  (Crystal "Connor"'s choice), to the blog.

1. How do you feel about your role in the book?
Hi! Thanks so much for having me today.

Oh wow, how do I feel about my role “In the foothills of Mt. Empyreal?” Actually it was really challenging because there are two books. Lori Titus wrote The Guardians of Man: Black Feathers Fell in the Foothills of Mt. Empyreal and Crystal Connor wrote In The Foothills of Mt. Empyreal: The End is Now. Both books take place in the same town revolving around the same event but each book is its own story so you don’t have to read them both to know what’s going on even though we hope that you do read them both.

My role is paramount in both stories. It’s a lot of pressure having a major role in just one book, so you can only imagine how hard it is being one of the leads in two.  I was 1st brought on to this project by Crystal Connor, she’s a really tough writer to work for and from very early on I had the feeling that she thought I wasn’t right for the stories. I was so afraid that I was going to lose the part or get killed off. So basically I was fighting to prove my worth in every single scene.

Lori Titus was extremely supportive from the beginning and literally saved my life but that ended up being both a blessing and a curse because Crystal wrote scenes to see if I could handle the role and Lori wrote scenes to prove that I could. Crystal was downright brutal and in no way, shape, or form did Lori coddle me. She pushed me hard, really hard, both of them did and I didn’t want to let Lori down and of course I wanted to prove Crystal wrong. Not in a smug way, but more like hoping to make her proud of me. Does that make any sense, lol I hope so.

2. Did you have fun during the writing of your tale?
Actually, even though at 1st it was hard, yes! It didn’t take me long to show what I could bring to the stories so about a 3rd of the way in I started to realize that my role in both books would be a heroic one! No pressure there, right, lol.

Once I realized that I had finally won the confidence of both writers I was able to relax a little bit, I brought my A-game and every single day, I showed up and showed out! It was so incredible to be so trusted with two very different yet equally powerful roles. I am the same person in both stories but my circumstances are vastly different which allowed me to display the entire range of my abilities.
This is Justin Granthem,  Marradith's love interest from Hunting in Closed Spaces.

What I think I enjoyed the most was that both writers allowed me to be vulnerable, allowed me to make mistakes, I was allowed to cry, to doubt myself, have the readers doubt me and then using what seems to be my weaknesses to showcase my strengths. With me the writers created a really complicated, multi-faceted, flawed character that I hope you’ll fall in love with, root for and forgive after the times that I piss you off.

3. What would you do with your own happy ending?
LOL, that depends on your definition of what a happy ending is. There are some really tender moments between Parker and I in The Guardian’s of Man and had I wrote this story I think our happy ending would have been us on a large piece of farmland raising kids and livestock but I didn’t and let me be the 1st to warn you that the writer’s who did are crazy! You can laugh if you want to but you’ll see. Certifiable. Both of them, and Crystal probably needs a hug. Go ahead keep laughing, just you wait, you’ll see and be remember I warned you!

4. If you could have any animal for a pet, what would it be?
I’m a bleeding heart for dogs. There’s a reason they all get to go to heaven.

5. If you could be anyone else, would you? If so, who?
Anyone else from Fate’s Keep? Gosh that’s a really tough question. I would have to say Nysees She is the epitome of a strong female lead, in both stories. Growing up idolizing people like Wonder Woman, Natasha Irons, and Storm it’s hard not to gravitate towards a woman like her. She is the closest thing to a superhero that I’ll ever meet in my life time, she made some of toughest decisions’ I’ve ever seen and she did it without flinching, but in retrospect, I’d doubt I’ve have her strength and wisdom. I’m only human and she is a Celestial. And Lord knows it takes supernatural strength to be a guardian of men and a commander at that.

6. What was the saddest moment of your life?
My last scene in St. Peter’s cathedral in The End is Now. I don’t want to give anything away but I was completely devastated, blindsided really, because I didn’t see it coming. I did everything right, I did, I really did. I fought against all odds and gave everything that I had and it wasn’t enough. It just wasn’t enough.

Ah, gosh I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to get all chocked up. But it wasn’t like in the beginning when I 1st became a member of the cast and knew I was staking on thin ice, because after the mid way mark I was being supported and encouraged by both writers, they trusted me with some really major scenes, they trusted me to work things out on my own. I felt so empowered and so full of hope…

I was stunned. I know this isn’t healthy but I always replay everything in my head over and over again wondering what I could have done differently, beating myself up for doing things the way that I did, and just trying to figure out what I did so wrong.

It was really tough for me after that, it took a while to come to terms with how things ended up and it still bothers me to this day. It’s just so hard to deal with the fact that sometimes the best you have isn’t good enough, ya know?

7. If you could tell the author anything, what would you say?
I would thank them both for breathing life into me, for creating two amazing worlds that I was allowed to be a part of. For trusting me. I would let them know that I am so incredible grateful for the time I spent with Parker in The Guardians of Man, and the companionship of Rocket, Len, Loree, Skylar and Cartaphilus and being able to experience the glory of Tactical Bacon in The End is Now.

Living In the Foothills of Mt. Empyreal with everyone who calls Fates Keep home is exactly where I was meant to be and I wouldn’t trade that for anything in world. I live in Fates Keep, and as you know, there’s no place like home.
8. What is the one goal you hope to achieve in life before you die?
Writer Lori Titus said that our stories will remain as a testament to future generations. That our struggles during the Collapse will not go unknown, that everything that we went through will hold hope for mankind. My goal is to live every day of my life working toward that promise, to take care of myself and those around me so that we may be blessed to live long enough to see that, at least in part, start to happen.

9. What do you wish to be remembered for?
In all honesty I just hoped to be remembered. Long after you close these books I hope that I’m thought of from time to time and that you come back to Fates Keep to visit every once in awhile.

EXCERPT
The bird flew in circles, climbing high into the cold night sky.
She was ready to turn around and fly back towards Leighton’s house when she saw it through the treetops; a structure abutting the edge of the property, between a hill and a thatch of trees.
She saw something gleaming.
Fiona landed, and phased back into her human form. Pine needles assaulted her bare feet. She stepped carefully, thinking of snakes and other things that might be crawling in the undergrowth. Despite the fact that she could Shift into almost any animal, there were a few of them that she did not like. Anything that slithered or had multiple eyes or sets of legs fit easily into that category.
Crickets were loud in her ears. Moonlight helped, but she felt herself moving slower than she liked. What she was able to see quite clearly from above she couldn’t make much sense of from the ground.
She was standing in front of the door before she realized she was in the right place. Fiona sighed, wanting to laugh, but choked the sound in her throat. Leighton could be anywhere, she reminded herself.
The door was glass, and it was unlocked. She slipped inside. The lights were off. The most delicious smell came to her. Flowers. She was surrounded by them.
“Who’s there?” a voice called.
She looked up and saw a pair of green eyes glowing at her from above. Now she knew what she’d seen when she was outside.
“Justin?”
“Fi!” She could hear the relief in his voice.
She fumbled in the darkness, and was able to find the controls for the lights.
The light came on in sections, like the power being turned on in a stadium, until all of them were on. She put a hand over her mouth.
Justin was hanging from the ceiling, suspended by two black cords tied around his arms, from shoulder to wrist on each side. The cords were attached to iron hooks placed on either side of the walls. The cords were so tight that they cut into his flesh. His blood dripped onto the floor. What a clever torture device, she thought darkly. If he pulled either side, he would rip off his own arm. But if he just stayed there, he’d bleed to death. Slowly.
The sea of poppies shivered. Somewhere above a fan whirred softly. The greenhouse was huge, and time was of the essence.
“Don’t take this wrong, Fi,” he said, “never happier to see you, but uh, what are you doing here? You’re supposed to be with Marra-”
“She’s up at the house,” Fiona cut him off. She was looking around, for tools, a weapon, something. “I don’t have time to explain. Let’s just say she does not take no for an answer.”
He almost smiled, despite the pain.
“Leighton’s got his own opium farm here, doesn’t he?” Fiona said, trying to distract him. She crossed into the back of the greenhouse, which led into a small room, not much more than a closet. There was a cache of opium bundled in bags, and with it, something to protect the illegal stash.
“Leighton’s heavy on it,” Justin said, as she came back into view. “Though I’d bet opium isn’t the only thing.”
“Stay as still as you can. I have - an idea. You need to trust me.”
He closed his eyes, and she saw his lips move. “Promise me something.”
“What?”
“If you can’t get me down, don’t waste your time. Get my girl away from him.”
Fiona shook her head as she lifted the gun. “No. Do it yourself.”
Justin didn’t have time to flinch. A flash erupted from the muzzle of her gun.

Book Blast: Mistress of the Wind

Visit participating Posse bloggers here

This is the first book in the Arucadi: The Beginning series.

Windspeaker Kyla Cren gathers news from the wind and passes on to her village its warnings about mindstealers, creatures that rob human minds, leaving their victims insensible and helpless. Because Kyla's parents were victims of mindstealers, the need for revenge consumes her. She attacks two mindstealers and rescues their victim, but gets no satisfaction from the act. The ungrateful victim, a powerful mage, thrusts upon her the care of Claid, who appears to be an appealing young child. He's not a child, the Mage Alair declares, and challenges her to discover what Claid really is. That challenge sends her from her native village on a journey of discovery that takes her into the wider world beyond her isolated valley, a world in which machines have replaced magic. Harrowing experiences teach her more about herself than about Claid and eventually bring her back to Mage Alair, whom she joins in a scheme to destroy the mindstealers, a plan which might result in tragedy but which could also lead Kyla to the full truth about Claid's nature and her own.

Book Tour- Task Force: Gaea, Finding Balance - Tens List

I asked author David Berger what his top ten favorite movies are, and this is what he kindly responded. I have to agree on quite a few of them myself :) What about you? I hope you like it!

Hmm. I don't really have "favorite" movies, but I'll do my best. :)

In no particular order:

1. Xanadu: This one ranks up there, as cheesy as it is, because of the Greek mythology: Olivia Newton John as the muse Terpsichore on earth to inspire a musician to follow his dream and open a roller disco. I love both ONJ's music and the group ELO. Plus, Fred Astaire is a bonus. Just a fun memory from my childhood.
2. Jumping Jack Flash: This was my first exposure to Whoopi Goldberg, and I remember laughing so hard when I first saw it. Again, just a memory from my youth that has stuck with me all these years.
3. Clash of the Titans: The story of Perseus and Medusa with Ray Harryhausen's animations. Epic win! Anything with Greek mythology has my undivided attention, and this version (not the modern remake) is definitely one of my all-time favorite movies.
4. Jeffrey: What's not to like: campy gay romantic comedy with Steven Weber, Patrick Stewart, and Michael T. Weiss. Just a silly romp that has it's ups and downs, but it's a fun movie.
5. Superman: THE quintessential superhero movie for me. I remember believing a man could fly when I walked out of the theater. Christopher Reeve IS Superman for me, and I will always remember the night in the Northport theater on Long Island when I saw this. A huge childhood memory that continues to make me smile.
6. Willow: Being a fantasy lover, I can't help but love this sword-and-sorcery flick. This was one of those movies for me that I've watched over and over, and it never gets old for me. I love Warwick Davis and Val Kilmer in this.
7. Mindwalk: This is one of those cerebral films that resonates with me to this day. It's existential, philosophical, and thought-provoking. I don't know many people who have seen it, but those who do really love it.
8. History of the World Part I: Mel Brooks. Do I really have to say anything else? This movie just gets better over the years. I've been a Mel Brooks fan since I can remember, and the musical numbers throughout this movie are terrific ice breakers with new people once we discover we love this movie.
9. Blazing Saddles: See #8. It's one of those movies you really couldn't make today. A Mel Brooks classic. I didn't understand it all when I first saw it as a kid, but over the years, I've grown to love it as a classic comedy.
10. The Lion in Winter: Hilaaarious movie with Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn. Some of the funniest lines I've ever heard: Eleanor (Hepburn): [to her jewelry] I'd hang you from the nipples, but you'd shock the children. This is a smart humor movie for me.

During the age of Olympos, when a vengeful goddess shatters the Sacred Scales, both immortals and humans alike suffer. Apollo, the god of truth, goes from a glorious existence as The Shining One to a victim of Zeus’ wrath, and his journey makes him question his godhood, his role in the cosmos, and his views on humanity. Prophecy and the Fates direct his course, and he must make difficult, yet vital, choices. Millennia pass, and Dan, Aleta, Brandon, and Sarah—four reluctant modern-day heroes gifted by ancient civilizations born of the gods—bound by prophecy, have to choose whether or not to save their world when it could mean they never existed. They must master their new powers while battling against incomprehensible forces from the Underworld and repairing the Sacred Scales, destroyed long ago. With the equilibrium between Order and Chaos unhinged, and the Olympian gods struggling to exist, these four must ally themselves with the United Nations to protect an endangered world, becoming the only group who can fight against metaphysical threats to the Earth, forging Task Force: Gaea. Can mortals succeed where gods cannot go?

David Berger
Boston born, I grew up on Long Island in New York, and have my B.A. in English with a Master's in Secondary Education. I currently teach AP English Literature, IB English, and Creative Writing in Land O' Lakes, FL. My avid appreciation for fantasy fiction came from a childhood love of Greek mythology and comic books, especially Wonder Woman. Stemming from this literary love affair, I published my first novel, Task Force: Gaea—Finding Balance, in February 2012.

In addition to my fantasy writing, I have written poetry, much of which was influenced by my travels abroad, namely to Ireland. My hibernophilia extends not only to a great love of the Emerald Isle itself, but also to the writers who hail from there, namely W. B. Yeats, and I studied this poet in a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship at the National University of Ireland in Galway in 2005.

Additionally, I have traveled to Spain, France, and England—all with trips I have led with students—and hope to show more of my students what the world beyond Florida looks like.

I'm "living the dream," as it were, and I love life—I just hope it loves me in return. I reside in Land O' Lakes, FL with my partner of 13 years, Gavi, and our two cats, Yankel and Shayna.

Book Blast: The Souls of Aredyrah Series

Tour Schedule

Series: Souls of Aredyrah

About the Series
Game of Thrones meets Narnia in this epic tale of two boys whose chance meeting leads them to a disturbing discovery: Not only are they bound by blood and prophecy, but their opposing beliefs are founded on similar lies. With adventure and romance, mysticism and cultural conflicts, this coming-of-age tales asks: What would you do if you learned everything you’ve been raised to believe is false—and those in power will do anything to stop the truth?

Book 1
In the world of Aredyrah, things are not what they seem. An ancient Purge has plunged the island into darkness, isolating its cultures by superstition and fear. Dayn lives in the northernmost region of Kirador and knows nothing of the great city-state of Tearia far to the south. All he knows is the Kiradyns are the only survivors of a god’s fiery wrath, and he looks nothing like them. Meanwhile Ruairi, a prince destined for greatness, resents his Tearian obligations, longing for a life he can never hope to have. But when tragedy takes his beauty as well as his name, he finds himself exiled by the very beliefs he once held dear. Both boys long for acceptance in societies that cling to religious ideals, but when fate throws them together, Dayn and Ruairi discover some unwelcome truths: not only are they bound by blood and prophecy, but the teachings they have been raised on are nothing more than lies. Will they reveal what they have learned, risking their lives and the security of those they love? Or will they keep silent, denying their destinies and the future enlightenment of their world?

Book 2
The Prophecy has come to life in Tearia, and the Temple wants nothing more than to see it dead. Whispers say the Unnamed One walks amongst them, and there is little doubt as to who that person is. Reiv is oblivious to the hopes turning in his direction, just as he is ignorant of a plot being waged against him. He has no time for rumors or innuendos; he is too busy trying to build a new life for himself. But the life he longs for will have to wait. A rebel movement is growing, and Reiv’s cousin Dayn has joined the insurgents in their cause.

Angered by Dayn’s involvement, Reiv reverts to his old self-serving behaviors. He wants nothing to do with prophecies or rebellions, and isn’t sure he wants anything to do with Dayn either. But when tragedy throws Reiv into new turmoil, he finds himself facing a dangerous choice. Someone he loves is dying, and there is only one chance to save him.

Will Reiv choose to be a Transcendor, fated to sacrifice his life for another? Or is he truly the Unnamed One, a hero destined for glory? One will save the life of an individual, the other that of an entire kingdom.

Book 3
The saga of Aredyrah continues as Dayn and Alicine return to Kirador to find things very different from when they left. Their house has been ransacked, their parents missing, and evidence of spell work has put a price on Dayn’s head. Frightened, they go to the nearest place they know of: the homestead of Haskel, a man who has never been accepting of Dayn’s differences, and even less so of his own son’s.

Back in Tearia, Reiv has settled into the quiet life of a Shell Seeker. But while the rhythm of his routine is calm, the longings of his heart are not. He turns to Cora, an eye-catching girl who has also drawn the attentions of Lyal, a man whose hatred of Reiv goes far beyond jealously. But romance is the least of Reiv’s worries. A terrible plague is spreading, and Reiv’s brother, the King, is determined to burn it from the land—even if it means killing innocents along the way.

While Reiv risks annihilation by Tearia’s increasingly brutal king, Dayn suffers challenges of his own. His disappearance from Kirador months before not only ended the existence he once knew, but started a witch hunt that threatens his safety and the survival of his clan.

Book 4
In this final installment of the award-winning Souls of Aredyrah series, Dayn and Reiv find themselves facing an old foe and falling into the trap of a new one. Struggling to make their way home through a bitter landscape, they soon discover they are not alone. A tribe known as the Taubastets has captured them in a life-or-death scenario, and the tribe’s chief is determined that one of them must be sacrificed. When a young warrior named Tyym vows to see them home, they face decisions that will not only affect their survival, but the spiritual salvation of their world.

While Reiv, Dayn, and Tyym navigate a web of conspiracy and doubt, Dayn’s sister Alicine struggles with loss and the impending threat of invasion. The king of Tearia has not abandoned his quest to slay them, and his seemingly unstoppable army is nearly through the pass. But when Tyym enters the scene, hope is rekindled. Even Alicine cannot deny the charisma of the mysterious warrior who has wormed his way into their lives, and into her heart.

The game is in play. A traitor is in their midst. Can the souls of Aredyrah hope to defeat a monster disguised as a king? Or will they succumb to a darkness beyond their understanding?

Author Tracy A Akers on What Inspired Her To Write The Fire & The Light

What inspired me to write The Fire and the Light (as told by Tracy A Akers)

For most of my life, I never thought of myself as a writer. It wasn’t something I’d previously aspired to be. Creatively I’d always preferred drawing, but I’d set my art tools aside when I became an adult with real-world responsibilities. No time for being creative, I reasoned. I had bills to pay. One day, out of the blue, I realized it had been thirty years since I’d picked up a sketch pad, so decided to try my hand at it again. Unfortunately, or so I thought at the time, the first thing I attempted to draw refused to be drawn. In place of the image I had in my head, a red-haired boy riding a horse in a field of flowers appeared on the page. At first I fought against it, but then I decided to go with the flow. If nothing else, it could be used for practice, and I could always throw it in the trash, which I fully expected to do. By the time I finished the colored-pencil picture, (which took weeks,) I knew not only the boy’s name, but his world, his history, and all the challenges he and his friends faced. The experience was so profound, I decided there must be a reason for it. I jotted down some notes so I wouldn’t forget the story he had “told” me, and the next thing I knew, those notes had turned into four novels.

Series: Souls of Aredyrah, Book #1
